Soul Food at Amy Ruth’s (Harlem)

IMG_0844Go get some soul food at Amy Ruth’s!

Amy Ruth’s is a staple soul food restaurant in Harlem.  Please don’t go to Amy Ruth’s expecting “fancy”.  It’s simply a NYC diner offering delicious southern & comfort food. However, one bite of their Mac and Cheese and you will be in heaven.

The Food: the menu has all the southern staples covered; Mac & Cheese (very cheesy, baked), Collard Greens made with smoked turkey (well seasoned, not vinegary), Candied Yams (not overly sweet, creamy) and Fried Chicken (crunchy exterior, juicy, and tender on the inside). You can order the fried chicken plain, honey glazed or smothered (my personal favorite). In addition to all these delicious options, Amy Ruth’s offers 14 different versions of chicken and waffles. As a celebration of black culture, the entrees are so eloquently named after famous black people, (e.g. The President Obama, the Gabrielle Union etc.). My personal favorite has to be the smothered turkey legs AKA The Roger ToussaintI love the gravy, the large turkey wing and the price.

Ambiance: casual and diner feel. Perfect for quick meals and take out. Open until 5am on Fridays and Saturdays

Service: Friendly and quick.

Personal Warning if you are going for brunch on Sunday, you need to get there before the church crowd lets out because once church lets ou… The line is usually very long.
