Overview: Red Velvet Wine is a red wine made by Cupcake Vineyards. Back in 2013, I was initially intrigued by the name and the label of the wine so I thought I’d give it a try. For the price (under $10), it’s a decent and unique wine.

From the Winemaker: “Experience a wine as rich, soft and elegant as red velvet. Our Red Velvet blend delivers over-the-top aromas of chocolate, deep dark blackberries and luscious red fruits that follow through to the palate. Finish with a hint of coconut and creamy mocha that shows unmistakable intensity and length. Red Velvet combines Zinfandel, Merlot, and Petite Sirah. Each varietal adds distinct characteristics and lends structure, aroma and depth of flavor. We ferment each varietal separately before blending. Finally, a unique oak regime infuses creaminess.”

Pairings: According to the Winemakers, Red Velvet wine is very versatile and pairs nicely with anything from a BLT, some chili, or chocolate cake. I personally enjoy drinking it with a bowl of Chili.

Personal Tasting Notes: Don’t let the name of the wine trick you into thinking it’s a dessert wine. While Red Velvet wine is on the sweeter side, it’s definitely not as sweet as a dessert and in fact, probably more on a drier side. It does have little creamy texture, thanks to the fact that the entire blend is aged on a unique oak regime. The flavors revealed hints of chocolate and blueberries, a weird combination for some but a delicious and unique flavor for me.
