“Melt in your mouth”

Let me preface this review by saying that I absolutely love comfort food. A delicious bowl of macaroni and cheese reminds me of growing up back home in Chicago. In my experience, a lot of NYC restaurants have failed at executing delicious and tasty comfort food, appeasing to a black foodie. Therefore, when I was invited to try out a new comfort food restaurant in Astoria called “The Freckled Moose”; I was admittedly ecstatic!
Owner and Chef Peter Lyman of The Freckled Moose”, was born in Massachusetts and grew up with a love and appreciation for homemade food and everything having to do with the outdoors. In fact, the name of his restaurant is actually one of his old childhood nicknames. The restaurant incorporates additional personal touches from Peter’s childhood, such as his grandma’s famous “Melt in your Mouth” cookies featured on the dessert menu. Peter says it took him almost 3 years to master his grandma’s recipe. Admittedly, while the cookies don’t look like much, just take one bite and you will be thoroughly surprised. (Trust me on this)

Given Peter’s love of homemade food, the menu at the Freckled Moose features big flavors and delicious comfort food options. The crab-stuffed tater tots are a popular choice at the restaurant. One bite of a tot dipped in the spicy remoulade sauce and you will be addicted. To drink, The Freckled Moose offers a selection of seasonal and local beers, assorted wines, and NYC-based liquors like Taconic Bourbon, Fort Hamilton rye and Farmer’s gin. The cocktails are simply fantastic.

Other hits at the restaurant include the bacon-wrapped scallops, lobster ravioli, Ribeye steak & Fries, Pete’s Stuffed Chicken and sides of Mac and cheese. The Mac and Cheese with bacon was a meal highlight.
Overall, I really enjoyed my dinner at the Freckled Moose in Astoria. So if you love hanging out in Astoria (like me), then I encourage you to head on over and try out this new hot spot. And, don’t forget to grab a tasty cocktail!
