Event Recap: Beach Roadtrip (“BRT”) Weekend (Atlantic City, NJ)

Created in 2012, Beach Road Trip Weekend, or #BRTweekend, is the ultimate destination, day-party series. Inspired by Caribbean culture, each of the festivals includes 6 uniquely themed events, all-inclusive with free drinks & food throughout an entire weekend.

Thanks to my Caribbean boyfriend, this was actually my first year attending the event. Overall, I had a fantastic time, partying and enjoying Caribbean music and parties on the beautiful boardwalk of Atlantic City. If I had to pick, I think the Jouvet breakfast party was my favorite event. The music was good and it was a fun time getting messy from the paint and getting wet. However, this event didn’t start on time so instead of being a breakfast party, it was more like a two-hour brunch party. And, there was no food, which was the unfortunate theme of the weekend.

Lastly, it appears that the organizers of BRT weekend don’t take criticism very well. As many people tried leaving comments on their Instagram page only for them to be deleted and eventually blocked by the organizers. (e.g., read this review here). Overall, some people were comparing BRT weekend to the Frye Festival; just look up the hashtag #brtfyrefestival on Twitter to get a better idea. (YIKES!!! WHAT A FREAKING PR NIGHTMARE!!!)

As an event that caters to Caribbean & Black people, it’s very unfortunate that a LOT of people felt scammed and the organizers didn’t feel the need to own up to it. As a black professional, who values her coins and likes to party, I do feel like I didn’t exactly get my money’s worth.

Nevertheless, I make the best of everything I do, so yes, I had a lot of fun. Overall, I just wish the organizers would invest some of their profits into hiring professional event organizers next year and don’t take our patronage for granted; because people like me, who intentionally try to support black businesses and restaurants, want to support you! So PLEASE #DOBETTER
