Alta (Greenwich Village)

Alta – Greenwich Village.

I almost walked right past this place! There’s no sign outside the door (at least visible at 6pm) and the restaurant is located in a beautiful yet somewhat inconspicuous townhouse. Therefore, after standing outside perplexed and then observing a few people enter; I confirmed I was in the right place and eagerly began my mission to find delicious tapas at Alta in Greenwich Village.

The Ambiance

The ambiance was lovely, modern and cozy. I can see myself having a romantic date at this restaurant. Alta is definitely a hot spot in the West Village, evidenced by the large crowd after 7 pm.

The Food

Overall, the portions are on the small side, so I ended up spending about $30 to feed myself. (I was hungry).  If coming with a group of four, I would expect to spend approximately $50 – $60 per person.  Here is what I tasted on my first visit to Alta:

Fried Goat cheese balls with lavender infused honey. (2 orders) I’m not a huge fan of goat cheese but I thought I would give this dish a try. For $5, this was an excellent starter. In fact, I enjoyed this dish so much that I ordered a second round immediately  after my first bite. The savory and pungent flavor of the goat cheese, mixed with the sweetness of the lavender infused honey and the crispy fried exterior, were all delicious and harmonious. This is a must try!

The Lamb Meatballs. This was also an excellent dish. The lamb meatballs were juicy, well seasoned, and delicious. The red pepper sauce added a delicious zesty flavor to the dish. If I were not stuffed from eating two orders of fried goat cheese, I would have gone for another round of these as well.

The pulled pork empanadas with a spicy cilantro sauce. This was my least favorite of the three items I ordered. The pulled pork had delicious, juicy flavor, but the crust lacked flavor and the cilantro sauce was just “ok”. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this dish mainly because the pull pork was delicious.

While, I didn’t get a chance to order it,  the Brussels Sprouts looked delicious. I can’t wait to order on my next visit to Alta.

Additionally, they have an extensive wine list and cocktail menu as well.

The Service

The Service was fantastic! Despite the crowd. No one rushed me to leave and I was encouraged to try additional options and dessert. The bartender was very friendly and the manager was seen helping out at the crowded bar.

Perfect for: Girls night out, date night, large crowds – Reservations strongly recommended.
